A recent photo of aespa on instiz has fueled discussions on idol diet pressures, with fans noticing their strikingly thin figures. Many female fans, who hold significant influence in the idol industry, expect idols to maintain extremely slim physiques, often resulting in unhealthy dieting. Former idols have shared stories of severe health impacts from extreme diets, sparking concern for current idols’ well-being.
aespa Photo on Instiz Sparks Idol Diet Debate
A recent photo of aespa shared on the Korean online community instiz has drawn significant attention. This photo, featuring the members’ silhouettes captured from behind, accentuates their figures through backlighting. Many fans quickly noticed aespa members’ slim physiques, leading to widespread comments and admiration on their slender body lines. However, the image also raised concerns among some fans regarding the group’s extreme thinness and the potential health implications for idols expected to maintain such standards.
Fan Reactions Highlight aespa Members’ Body Image
instiz members shared various opinions on aespa’s appearance, with many admiring the members’ slim builds. Winter received specific praise for her upper body shape and notably thin waist, sparking comments that her figure looked so petite that even breathing might be difficult. NingNing’s visible weight loss also caught attention, with fans expressing awe. Many comments reflected that despite their thinness, aespa’s body lines appeared elegant. Yet, a growing concern emerged regarding whether such extreme thinness is healthy or sustainable for idols.
The Influence of Female Fans on Idol Diet Culture
The standards surrounding idol diet culture differ notably between male and female fan expectations. Female fans, who form a substantial part of the audience, often prefer extremely slim body types. This contrasts with male fans, who may favor a wider range of body shapes, including more curvaceous or naturally built physiques. Female fans, who are significant financial contributors to the industry, buy hundreds of albums, attend concerts, and purchase merchandise. This substantial financial support often places idols under intense pressure to fulfill their expectations, sometimes pushing them to unhealthy dieting extremes to maintain a slender appearance.
Idol Dieting Sacrifices: Struggles Behind the Scenes
During their active careers, idols rarely mention the sacrifices they make for these intense diets, often out of fear of fan backlash. However, several former idols have spoken openly about the extreme measures they took. For example, former AOA member Doyeon revealed that she would eat only a quarter of an apple each day, or at most, two boiled eggs and a lot of carbonated water to feel full. Mamamoo’s Solar shared that she once ended up in the emergency room due to severe dieting. Brave Girls’ Minyoung experienced weakened immunity that led to severe allergic reactions, and Apink’s Bomi developed atopic dermatitis from extreme dieting. These stories highlight the serious health consequences idols face due to extreme dieting.
Promoting Healthier Standards in Idol Diet Culture
The idol industry must address the challenges female idols face regarding diet culture. It should encourage healthier standards. As more fans become aware of the adverse health effects of extreme dieting, they may reconsider demanding such thinness from idols. Shifting fan expectations and promoting body-positive standards could foster a healthier environment for idols. This shift would reduce the pressure to maintain unsustainable body shapes. Fans have a critical role to play in reshaping idol culture by supporting idols’ physical and mental health over rigid aesthetic standards.

It’s a shame to see K-pop idols putting their health at risk with extreme diets. I wonder why Korean female fans have such high beauty standards for idols.
It’s a shame that people don’t care about the health risks of overweight and obesity as much as they “care” when people do the efforts to be beautiful, lean and fit.
Kpop idols’ diets have gone way too far. Like, they’re literally getting hospitalized from starving themselves. Enough is enough with fans demanding unrealistic body standards. They can be beautiful and healthy at any size!
“They can be beautiful and healthy at any size!”
No, they can’t. Stop fooling yourself and others with this nonsense. Also, their body standards are not unrealistic. In fact they are achieved very easily IF you have the genetics for it and follow healthy habits and routines.
If you don’t have the genetics, well, just make peace with it and be the best you can be (which, probably, is a lot thinner than you think).
Of course it might seem unrealistic if your habits include eating all day long, 4 meals a day, lots of snacks, combined with sedentarism… yes, looking like Momo or Lisa is going to be unrealistic that way…
“They can be beautiful and healthy at any size!”
By the way: The knees of an obese K Pop Dancer wouldn’t last one tour!
