The Badminton Association of Korea is facing backlash due to a payback scandal involving unauthorized use of sponsorship funds by its president. Allegations of financial misconduct and restrictions on player sponsorships have fueled public outrage. The government is now investigating the payback clause in the association’s sponsorship contracts.
The Badminton Association Faces Growing Criticism
The Badminton Association of Korea is under fire following remarks by An Se-young, the gold medalist in women’s singles at the Asian Games, World Championships, and Olympics. The association’s enforcement of team loyalty rules, restrictions on personal sponsors, and unfair contracts with professional players have sparked widespread public outcry.
Payback Scandal Unveiled in the Badminton Association
Further complicating matters, allegations of misconduct and corruption involving Kim Taek-gyu, the President of the Badminton Association, have emerged. On August 14th, a report by The Segye Ilbo revealed that the association and Kim had allegedly used 30% of funds received from Yonex sponsors without proper accounting. This additional 30% of payback was reportedly used arbitrarily by Kim.
Sponsorship Issues and Payback Mismanagement
In 2023, the Badminton Association entered into a sponsorship agreement with Yonex, which included a payback clause for shuttlecock costs. These shuttlecocks were used in various tournaments and government-sponsored programs. However, the payback of 30% received from Yonex, amounting to over 100 million KRW in equipment, was not recorded in the association’s financial books. This unaccounted payback was allegedly misused by Kim without following proper procedures.
Public Outrage Over the Payback Scandal and Badminton Association’s Accountability
The news of the payback scandal broke on the Korean community site theqoo, leading to widespread condemnation. Many argued that the Badminton Association president should repay the misappropriated funds and face imprisonment. The community’s anger is rooted in the belief that the association has been exploiting An Seyoung’s personal sponsorships. The Badminton Association allegedly blocked her from securing personal sponsorships while benefiting from association-level deals, heavily influenced by her success.
Government Investigation into the Badminton Association’s Payback Scandal
The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism has acknowledged these issues. The ministry is currently investigating the payback clause in the sponsorship contract and the fact that it was not accounted for. If it is confirmed that the Badminton Association president misused the funds without proper authorization, it could lead to severe consequences.
