The controversy began after Min Heejin accused ILLIT of copying NewJeans, leading to a legal dispute with ILLIT’s agency, Belift Lab.
Intriguing Photo of Wonhee on Nate Pann
A fascinating photo recently surfaced on the Korean community site Nate Pann. It features Wonhee, a member of the girl group ILLIT, bowing at a 90-degree angle. In Korean culture, bowing is a common form of greeting, especially among public figures like celebrities. However, Wonhee’s exceptionally deep bow caught significant attention, even by Korean standards.
Backlash Against Haters
The most liked comments on Nate Pann criticize those who have mercilessly attacked Wonhee’s character. Many expressed sympathy for the underage Wonhee, referring to her affectionately as a child and lamenting the personal attacks she has endured. There are also numerous supportive comments, with users stating that the excessive criticism has made them want to cheer for her even more. Some comments mentioned that even those leaving positive remarks about Wonhee were being targeted by haters. Criticism also extended towards fans of NewJeans, suggesting that if NewJeans, as minors, deserve protection, so does Wonhee.
Persistent Criticism of Wonhee
Despite the support, a significant number of people continue to criticize Wonhee. Mocking comments accusing her of overacting have garnered over 100 likes. These critics also ridicule those who post positive comments about her, suggesting that efforts to defend her character are futile and vowing to continue their negative remarks.
Origin of the Hostility: Min Heejin’s Press Conference
The hostility towards Wonhee began following a press conference held by Min Heejin. She claimed that ILLIT copied NewJeans in every aspect of their entertainment activities, from hair and makeup to choreography and video production. Additionally, NewJeans’ performance director alleged on social media that ILLIT had plagiarized NewJeans’ choreography. This prompted NewJeans’ fan club, Bunnies, to launch attacks against ILLIT. In response, ILLIT’s agency, Belift Lab, has filed a lawsuit against Min Heejin for obstruction of business and defamation.
Legal Challenges Surrounding Choreography Copyright
In South Korea, choreography copyright is not well established. Choreographers’ rights to their work, including the right to claim authorship, are not guaranteed. However, there are precedents where exact replication of choreography was recognized as a copyright infringement. The first academic society dedicated to the study of choreography copyright was founded only last August.
Given the current legal landscape, it is unlikely that Min Heejin’s allegations of plagiarism will hold up in court. Consequently, Belift Lab currently holds a favorable position in their legal dispute with Min Heejin.
