BTS’s Suga is expected to receive criminal punishment for an alcohol-related driving incident involving an electric scooter. Despite his high blood alcohol level, it is unlikely that he will face imprisonment. Instead, Suga will likely receive a significant fine as his criminal punishment.
Suga’s Alleged Police Investigation Causes Confusion
Reports claimed that BTS’s Suga faced investigation today for alleged alcohol-related driving. However, the news turned out to be false and confused the crowd. Early reports about Suga’s police appearance drew many journalists, but they learned that the appearance was not scheduled for today. This misinformation spread quickly and created a chaotic atmosphere.
Criminal Punishment Concerns Surrounding Suga’s Alcohol-Related Case
Although Suga did not appear at the police station, public attention remains on the potential criminal punishment for his alcohol-related offense. International fans, especially ARMY, are particularly concerned about the severity of the criminal punishment. Suga reportedly rode an electric scooter, which Korean law treats like a car. This classification might lead to a harsher criminal punishment compared to a regular e-scooter, as Korean traffic laws consider it a “motorcycle.”
Alcohol Levels and Criminal Punishment for Suga
Korean Road Traffic Law Article 148-2, Section 1, specifies penalties for alcohol-related driving. Blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.03%-0.08% can result in up to one year in prison or a fine of up to 5 million won. BAC of 0.08%-0.2% can lead to one to two years in prison or a fine between 5 million and 10 million won. BAC over 0.2% can result in two to five years in prison or a fine between 10 million and 20 million won.
On the 6th, Suga drove an electric scooter after drinking and collided with a curb. He was discovered by police during a patrol. Police noted the smell of alcohol and tested him. Suga’s BAC was 0.227%, far exceeding the 0.03% limit. This level suggests he could face two to five years in prison or a fine of 10 million to 20 million won.
Potential Criminal Punishment for Suga Based on Legal Precedents
Given Suga’s high blood alcohol level of 0.227%, he will likely receive a criminal punishment of at least 10 million won ($7,490). In similar cases, fines of around 15 million won ($11,235) are common. Due to the high alcohol level, there is a possibility of a prison sentence. However, it is common for suspended sentences to be given, so Suga is unlikely to serve jail time. Most likely, Suga will face a fine of approximately 15 million won ($11,235) without imprisonment.
